Months, years go by waiting some artists albums projects to come out. Being a fan of so many artists and constantly updating my iTunes library with whatever new music drops over the weeks, I thought (I’m bored and don’t give a fuck) it’d be fun to highlight a few projects that are due out in 2017 or should come out for a 2017 release.
The first album I’m most excited for is the upcoming studio album from Sub-Pop artist, Father John Misty. ‘Pure Comedy’ the follow up to ‘I Love You, Honeybear‘ is due out April 7th and has already been teased through singles as well as music videos. Coming off such a strong release with his previous album, I’m only expecting more and better from the bearded saint. If anything, it’d be cool to see him collaborate with other artists such as Thundercat, JMSN, John Frusciante, BadBadNotGood and KiD CuDi (again) to experiment and appeal to other audiences.
Another album that NEEDS to drop is 300 Entertainments USP, Young Thug‘s ‘HiTunes’…awfully styled as ‘Hy!£UN35’. Thugger has consistently been putting out project after project, collaborating with major artists and currently on Drake’s European tour. The project was announced in April 2015 and was supposed to drop that summer…yet nothing. Thug most definitely had an extremely eventful 2016 and for Thug to really take over 2017, his official debut album will have to drop for the Thugger-wave to survive. There’s only two things I want from the album; a Gucci Mane feature and Metro Boomin’ produced cut.
ScHoolBoy Q is still riding off the hype from his 2016 LP ‘Blankface LP‘ and as we approach the second month of the year (still a lot of time for new memes), Groovy Q has already confirmed that TDE will be dropping another Q album. Unfortunately, his latest albums (‘Oxymoron’ / ‘Blankface LP’) didn’t live up to their anticipation and don’t compare to his breakout projects. If Q drops his third major studio album and it doesn’t live up to its hype..I’ll have to just focus on his past work as his best work.
The two New Jersey emcees, Da$h and Retch have collaborated extensively in the past, have great chemistry together. However, music between the two came to a halt when Retch did a jail stint. Thankfully, there is still the talks of the two doing a collabo project together appropriately titled ‘Best Friends‘. It would be a great addition to the twos discographies as well as hearing the two unite once again for some turnt-up-ratchet-jams.
IF ANYONE NEEDS TO DROP AN ALBUM, IT’S FUCKING FLYING LOTUS. I can’t express (especially in text form) how much I need another FlyLo album. Coming off the mixed reviews of his debut film ‘Kuso‘ and being mute (musically) the majority of 2015 and 2016, it only seems FUCKING RIGHT THAT HE RELEASES AN ALBUM. I need the weird orchestration of keyboards and synths and Thundercats incredibly smooth but trippy bass lines. As well as this, FlyLo should also collaborate more within his Brainfeeder label as well. With the likes of The Underachievers, Tokimonsta and The Gaslamp Killer all on the same label, the music that could be produced just gives me goosebumps.
The last project I’m anticipating has only just been (kinda) confirmed by the upcoming Houston rapper, Maxo Kream. Kream is planning to release a joint project with Chiraq Drill rapper, Fredo Santana and to be honest, I’ve never been so excited for a project with Fredo. Not only is the gangster/hardcore themes expressed well by the artists, solo, but the chemistry between the two is undeniable as well. If the tape sounds like their previous collaborations, it should be a tape to keep an eye out for.
So, those are the projects (ATM) that I’m hopefully going to see drop in 2017. If not, I won’t be sad, just itching for more music to feed my addiction.
