Its been a while since I listened to any solo work from the L.A based rapper A$ton Matthews. Saying that, the last song I heard with Matthews was the chillingly smooth Trap instrumental blessed with features from Queens rapper Action Bronson and FLATBUSH ZOMBiES. I do feel quite bad not keeping my eye on Matthews considering this song dropped over three years ago.
Anyway, here’s my review of Matthews latest offering “Night to Remember” featuring Da$h. Over a hard AS FUCK loop of horns and aggressive hi-hats, Matthews goes in over the quick paced instrumental. His flow sounds largely inspired by TDE signee ScHoolBoy Q, however, not to the extent that it sounds like he’s ripping him off. However, Da$h’s guest verse is the highlight of the single. Going in with his regular dazed and intoxicated flow and hustling-inspired lyrics, Da$h steals the light from Matthews.
Altogether, the track is 100% hard. Matthews is energetic and abrasive, showing that Matthews is a rapper who has been in the dark too long too be no longer appreciated by his competitors and Hip-Hop community.
