Travis Scott – Days Before Rodeo Review

Before Travis released his anticipated (yet extremely disappointing) debut album, ‘Rodeo‘, Travis blessed his ‘Zombies’ with his excellent second mixtape, ‘Days Before Rodeo‘.

Rewinding all the way back to nearly three years ago (FUCK), Travis was teasing for a couple weeks with tweets of the release of a couple songs which eventually and thankfully became his best project to date.

The album is a wild ride of Travis’ experiences on drugs, romance, living the flashy lifestyle and turning the fuck up.

The album’s production credits shine on their own as well. While Travis provides additional production to 10/12 tracks, Travis tapped Southside, Mike Dean, FKi, Metro Boomin’, Lex Luger, Allen Ritter and Wondagurl to set the mood for the wild, turnt-up, house party vibes.

Features on the album are also great. Young Thug (I swear I’m not obsessed…) appears on “Mamacita” alongside his previous Rich Gang collaborator Rich Homie Quan and for the stellar Metro produced “Skyfall“. The Migos trio also comes together to provide insane verses with Peewee Longway for the extravagant FKi-cut, “Sloppy Toppy” and GOOD Music signee, Big Sean, rocks up on the radio-friendly “Don’t Play“.

Although all these tracks are major standouts from the tracklist, Travis also holds down his solo tracks pretty well. The introductory track “Days Before Rodeo : The Prayer” sets the tone of the mixtape. Dark, no-fucks-to-give, experimental and most of all – booming with individualism. Plus, the visuals for the first verse of “Days Before Rodeo : The Prayer” in the “Mamacita” video are also pretty rad and are a great artistic perspective of how Travis envisions his music.
Moving on, the fourth track on the tape, “Drugs You Should Try” is by far one of my favourite Trav songs. Not only does it have the chill, lean back, head-boppy vibe, it is also a display of his ability to create melodies, switch-up his flow in between verses to showcase his talent as a rapper but also, a vocalist.

Lastly, the Lex Luger smasher, “Zombies“, is also another incredibly underrated solo cut. Lex provides a beat so thunderous and making you want to march along to Travis’ extravagant leaned out but verses, I can’t help but mosh by myself when it comes on!

In all; it’s a solid project and to be honest? It’s one of my favourite mixtapes of all time.
